The Invisible Man's story was a representation of the black man's revelation to himself. The narrator, which is the Invisible Man, first starts out from being expelled from college and he is known as a spokesman. He said he was invisible from the start of the book because all people see when they look at him is their thoughts, their surroundings, and other people. Him being a spokesman made him a visible figure in Harlem. The Invisible Man lost his identity making him susceptible to conforming to other people's principles and values. If you don't know yourself, then how can you call yourself...yourself. Throughout the story the narrator, the Invisible Man lost his identity when he joined the Brotherhood, which was an organization that goes against black oppression, and they made him forget his name and his past when they fought together, however once he found himself in the middle of an identity crisis and an actual battle he decided to literally find himself. During the battle, the narrator hid in the sewers to solve his identity crisis, and he has been hiding there ever since.
